While atenolol causes few central nervous system side effects, such as depression and nightmares, it has been identified as increasing the risk.

Atenolol was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1981 for the treatment of hypertension and coronary artery disease. The drug is manufactured by AstraZeneca and is now available in generic forms made by other companies.

Make sure your doctor knows if you have heart rhythm problems; breathing issues such as asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis; kidney disease; blood circulation problems; or serious allergies.

The benefits generally outweigh the risks in patients with mild or moderate reactive airway disease that is well-controlled on inhaled corticosteroids and beta-2 adrenergic agonists.
