Both alprazolam (Xanax) and lorazepam (Ativan) are considered short-acting BZDs and when used for the right reasons are quite effective.

Dr O. Both shouldn’t really be used long term and treatment for more than 4 months should be re-evaluated to determine the patient’s continued need for the drug. Really, short-term.

The same warnings apply for both here. Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided—instead lower your daily dose by 0.5 mg every 3 days. Reduce your dose, don’t stop abruptly if you’ve been taking it for more than 2 weeks.

Important distinction here is Xanax has approval for use in panic disorder, Ativan does not.

Is Ativan milder than Xanax? Does anyone know?

Does anyone take ativan & use to take xanax? Or has anyone tried them both & prefer the ativan? Does anyone know the difference between.

I am on the methadone program, but when I first started the program I did not drive because the drug made me sleepy, once your body is used to the effects you should be fine, but if you have an accident that is determined to be your fault and they test you for drugs or alcohol and xanax or any drug that is mind altering shows up in your blood they can and will charge you for driving under the influence!!! That is a fact!. and I get my info from experience. It does say not to drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the drug will affect you, and it it makes you sleepy then you shouldn't be driving!!! And believe me, if you have an accident while on any drug that makes you sleepy you can be charged while driving under the influence.

Ativan is a better choice in patients that are elderly due to the fact that there are no active metabolites when our body breaks it down. Ativan does tend to last a little while longer in patients. It is important to note that since both Ativan and Xanax have a rapid onset of action and a relatively short half live, they have a higher risk of dependence and withdrawal symptoms vs.
