"But having all these labeled side effects can overwhelm doctors who must weigh the risks and benefits when prescribing a medication," Duke said. "The Food and Drug Administration has taken steps to discourage such 'overwarning,' but at present, information overload is the rule rather than the exception," Duke said.

Modern technology should be used to assist patients in understanding which of the side effects may be most relevant to them, the researchers say.

Such labels could take into account the individual patient's medical conditions and highlight those side effects that could be especially dangerous," Duke said.

Likewise LSD was never approved for marketing in the U.S. Some of them (Lumiracoxib, Rimonabant, Tolrestat, Ximelagatran and Zimelidine, for example) were approved to be marketed in Europe but had not yet been approved for marketing in the U.S., when side effects became clear and their developers pulled them from the market. This list is not limited to drugs that were ever approved by the FDA.

Usually this has been prompted by unexpected adverse effects that were not detected during Phase III clinical trials and were only apparent from postmarketing surveillance data from the wider patient community. Some drugs have been withdrawn from the market because of risks to the patients.
