SIDE EFFECTS is a provocative thriller about Emily and Martin (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum), a successful New York couple whose world unravels when.

That it can glide from these two poles with us barely realising is a testament to Soderbergh's talent. The feature evolves from an icy, haunting tale of depression and abandonment into a squalid, sordid, serpentine Alfred Hitchcock pastiche.

SIDE EFFECTS is a provocative thriller about Emily and Martin (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum), a successful New York couple whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by Emily's psychiatrist (Jude Law)—intended to treat anxiety—has unexpected side effects.

If that's the case, Side Effects is a great note on which to go out. We may lose Soderbergh to painting, theatre and HBO-fuelled TV, and that's a crying shame.

The storyline goes into tangles that have to be dealt with very rapidly if the audience is not to start laughing. Once Side Effects gets into its crime story, medication is swept aside by movie nonsense.

Opts for raucous frivolity over genuine substance. But it's great fun while it lasts.

Overcome with stress, the mentally fragile Emily performs a quasi-suicide attempt and is put in the care of Dr. Burns. Side Effects: One Pill Makes You Murder. Steven Soderbergh's "last" movie (until the next one) twists an anti-Pharma diatribe into a top-grade.

Thanks for the thoroughly enjoyable review -- and don't worry, you didn't give away too much! Personally, I thought the movie wrapped up too quickly and tidily. I did think Rooney Mara excellent in "Girl with Dragon Tattoo," but she does get to show a lot more nuance in "Side Effects.".

Citizenfour review – Edward Snowden documentary is utterly engrossing.

I am willing to go to the golf course right now, get down on my bended knees on the green, and pretty much beg Mr Soderbergh to put down his clubs, smash his putter, throw his niblick into the pond, forget this retirement nonsense and return to making films posthaste.
