Levothyroxine is a replacement for a hormone normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body's energy and metabolism.

A: It is important to take Synthroid on an empty stomach first thing in the morning because the absorption can be decreased by calcium, iron, fiber, and other substances. And you should wait at least four hours before taking any vitamins or products containing calcium, iron, magnesium, or aluminum. If you use cream or milk in your coffee, the calcium may interact with the Synthroid. You should wait at least 30 minutes after taking the Synthroid before you eat or drink anything. Recent studies have shown that even coffee itself might reduce the absorption of the medication.

Synthroid is a medicine used to treat hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland). Learn about Desk Reference. The following is not a full list of side effects.

Do not take Synthroid, either alone or in combination with other medicines, to treat obesity or for weight loss. In people with normal thyroid levels, doses of Synthroid typically used for hormone replacement are not effective for weight loss. Larger doses may result in serious or even life-threatening effects, especially when used in combination with certain other medicines used to reduce appetite.

Take Synthroid on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before eating breakfast.

Have the child drink the mixture right away.
