What are thyroid replacement hormones and how do they work?

The thyroid gland, a gland found in the lower neck is responsible for the production of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones increase cellular metabolism (activity of cells) that is responsible for growth, development of tissues, maintenance of brain function, body temperature regulation and several other cellular processes. The hormone responsible for most of the biological effects in the body is T3.

Synthroid (levothyroxine sodium tablets, USP) Side Effects

Like all levothyroxine products, Synthroid can have side effects. for clinical practice for the evaluation and treatment of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Partial hair loss may occur rarely during the first few months of SYNTHROID therapy, but this is usually temporary.

Always talk to your doctor if you have questions or concerns about your hypothyroidism treatment.

Larger doses may result in serious or even life-threatening effects, especially when used in combination with certain other drugs used to reduce appetite. Do not take SYNTHROID, either alone or in combination with other medicines, for the treatment of obesity or weight loss. In patients with normal thyroid levels, doses of SYNTHROID within the typical range used for hormone replacement are not effective for weight loss.

Decreases in TBG concentrations are observed in nephrosis, severe hypoproteinemia, severe liver disease, acromegaly, and after androgen or corticosteroid therapy (see also Table 2 ). Familial hyper- or hypo-thyroxine binding globulinemias have been described, with the incidence of TBG deficiency approximating 1 in 9000. Changes in TBG concentration must be considered when interpreting T 4 and T 3 values, which necessitates measurement and evaluation of unbound (free) hormone and/or determination of the free T 4 index (FT 4 I).
